Partisan Blues 4 Villa0!!!, it was a bright sunny day we totally destroyed them Think Phil Summerhill & Jimmy Greenhoff scored Cant say I recall where bthe Villa were inside the ground! Blues were all still on the Tilton, our hardcore boyos moved to the kop after a bit of a humbling from Millwall early the next season. I loved star soccer in our promo season under Sir Fred we seemed to be on every other week. Unlike today when almost every match was televised back in the day it was such a novelty. Getting back to that Villa game it may have been one of the rare time that John Sluewenhoek (rip) played well for us. I do not subscribe to the oft repeated mantra that modern day players earn too much good luck to them I say por old `Tulip` had a heart attack & died doing a bit of casual cash in hand lorry driving for a tin pot haulier in Bilston! Cant see Liam Ridgewell going down that path. KRO |

Villa were in the Kop. Blues moved to the Kop as it was less easy for away fans to "take". The Tilton was so easy as you're at the same level as the back when you come in. |

Des The scorers were Vowden, Vincent, Greenhoff and Summerill 45,000 Yes, The Villa were in the section of the Kop near the Jeff Hall scoreboard but they wouldn't have lasted too long there for the years that followed I recall that Millwall game too........my 16th birthday in April 1972 Blues won 1-0 and the hooligans won the headlines .......there were actually more Millwall fans at our last game of that season away match at Orient (the didn't use the 'Leyton' in front of the name at that time) when they tried fruitlessly to get the match abandoned by invading the pitch, phoning in bogus bomb scares before the game, attacking Blues players and sitting in the centre circle like a bunch of yoga groupies The ref would have nothing of it .....and thanks to Big Bob we went on to win 1-0 and go up with Norwich........Happy Days, eh ?? :Blues: ----------------------------------- |

Lads We are getting our wires crossed here. The match that Partisan refers to was the last game of our promo season 72, WE took about 20000 fans to Orient, Millwall were there in numbers and the atmosphere was well atmospheric from start to well after the finish. It was one of the best days of my life. The game Lowdlam mentions was the league match at home to Millwall the same season again we won but there was surprisingly little trouble inside the ground. However outside before and after there were pockets of aggro but no full scale battles. The game that decided the boyos to move from the Tilton to the Kop was 68 or 69 I will have to check the book but Millwall came mob handed and they had that real `barrow boy` look shaved heads, sheepskins & Doc Marts with jeans terminating mid calf. I loved it and within a week was a clone. Stayed like that till 72/73 then morphed into the suede look. Good times! KRO |

Yeah, you're probably right Des but don't forget the Tilton did not become a true away end until roughly the 1975/76 season when real segregation came into play......by that I mean the erection of the steel fences ........that's why Villa got the whole Tilton from then on .....as did Forest and Wolves too At that Millwall game in April 72 though there some fighting on the Kop / Tilton corner but the Police moved in quick The FA Cup 6th Round match in 1968 when Big Fred got the winner saw Chelsea fans actually allocated in parts of the Tilton and in 1975 Middlesboro fans were somehow allocated a section of the Kop (near the Jeff Hall scoreboard) .....as you say 68/69 was the true era of the Skinhead bovver boys with rolled up Levis and Doc Martens and Millwall, West Ham, Man United and Chelsea had loads of 'em ........Man United fans had a good portion of the Old Kop when we played them in the Cup in 68/69 .....United have always bought loads but half of them that rainly night were probably Brum or West Midlands based anyway The Cup games v Portsmouth and Ipswich in 1972 saw the bottom tier of the Railway End (which was still terracing back then ) used for away fans .....the Baggies fans were in the lower Railway too when we beat them 3-2 in 1972/73 in our first season back in the top flight I remember the game at The Hawthorns too earlier that same year ....the night we wore the famous Belgium flag or German flag 'turned 90 degrees' kit and there were loads of BlueNoses in the Birmingham Road end but there was hardly any trouble I even remember a couple of derby games at Villa Park where me and some mates went to Villa to buy tickets and sat in the Trinity Road stand purely because we knew the North Stand would be a cattle market and we got a much better view thus having to shell out more cash for that privilege .....don't forget there no ID checks or the need to be members of Travel Clubs back then As I said on another thread about 400 Leeds fans must have come to SA to buy tickets because they ended up in the Blues allocated Open Kop End at Hillsborough in the 1972 FA Cup semi .....obviously they were hellbent on causing aggro but it was again quickly contained by the Old Bill I did go to Chelasea in the 1970 Third Roud game where they won 3-0 and went on to that memorable replayed Final v Leeds......Like lowhdam said when we he went in 75 we were put in that old three tier corner of Stamford Bidge next to the open terracing behind the goal.....Jeeze ! that ground has so changed so much hasn't it ?? There's even a shopping village and hotel there now yet in the good old days most of it was Oval shaped and uncovered and Chelsea's home following were grouped in what was truly a Shed behind the other goal which seemed like it was miles away ....in fact that was in fact it's nickname, The Shed :LMAO: Remember going to Wolves we used the massive South Bank and had to brave that subway alley leading to that part of Molineux.....that stand was as big as the Holte End And Stoke always gave us the open end at the old Victoria yet they were always there waiting for us outside at the end of the game Blues always had a 'hardcore' that would somehow tactically group itself right next to away supporters but it wasn't until the Zulus arrived in the early 80's that started bringing us that 'bad boy' notoriety....and they employed the same trick How times change ,eh ?? The funny thing was back then was when you played one club you could guarantee there would be other fans from other clubs there and in some force too.......I remember a 0-0 away game at Spurs right after the pub bombings in 1974 and Chelsea fans turned up to taunt us.........thought that was mightily distasteful TBH but fairly typical of the London football fan metality back then In the 2-1 away win over Sheffield Wednesday (right before the Orient game) in 1972 there were fans from Sheffield United, Rotherham, Barnsley and of course Leeds chanting South Yorkshire rather than for the home side......it was all so 'tribal' wasn't it ??? ......same ground (Hillsborough) where we had lost to Leeds in the semi final just weeks before and that time we were 'trained' in to Wadsley Bridge station and had the full escort to and from by our friends in Blue helmets ........for the semi most of the trains had gone into Sheffield Midland in the city centre Now you can't even pay at the gate for a home game although I've heard they are introducing that again (or have already) Keep right on , old BlueNoses :lager: ---------------------------------------------------- |

Partisan I love reading these posts! A neighbour of ours got his ribs crushed in that Man u cup game in 68, from memory the second time only that Charlton Law& Best faced us at Stans. Bestie scored that night buit young Dave Robinson equalised late on, in the replay we got TROUNCED about 6 I think and our fans were battered senseless up there OUCH! The high point for me as aSkin was going to Huddersfield the season they went up as champs 1970? We thought we were the bollo and had lots of local girls interested, had such a good time about a dozen of us stopped over and went to a club in Dewsbury. 2 o clock in the morning half of us came up against a hells angel chapter at a burger bar! Mayhem for the next ten mins till luckily the old bill turned up we would have been killed for sure. Now out of those 6 lads one advises on the Hong Kong stock exchange, one breeds horses for showjumping sadly one is badly debillitated with illness one took his own life and one is a jailbird! And me. So you never know how people are going to develop because the de4ceased seemed to have it all at that stage of life! |

Des The Man United 5th Round replay score was 6-2 ....Summerill and Greenhoff were our scorers I think (only 75 per cent sure) ....I still have the programmes from both games I hope we go up this season because there are 4 venues where Blues need to bury some very old hoodoos as far as away grounds go Man United (a) we haven't won at Old Trafford since a 2-1 win on Jan 2nd 1978 Everton (a) we haven't won at Goodison Park since 16th Nov 1957 Arsenal (a) we've only played at The New Emirates once and earned a decent 1-1 draw last term but our last victory at the old Highbury was also back in 1957 (19th Oct) The one that surprised me was Blackburn Rovers.........Blues last League win up at Ewood Park was way back on 22 November 1952 ......more than 56 years ago now......we came close just a few years back in the PL being 3-1 up but they pulled back to 3-3 :banner: |

Did anyone used to get the football specials in the 70's. As lads we caught the train from Tamworth to the Midlands games , but further afield we used to get the special from New Street. I remember using them for Sheff Utd, Leeds, Luton (cup). Our support was so good there used to be 2 or 3 special trains. |

Lowdlam Soccer Specials! Jimmy Hill got the ball rolling at Cov with the sky blue special we followed very quickly. My first was to Crystal Palace 66/67 a thrilling(not) 0.0. draw. I think Malcom Beard got sent off? Two memories the first a good one chanting ay ay Hockey as we entered Euston Station (at that time he was a real hero to us (rip) and secondly having a bad dose of Montezumas revenge on the way back after having the audacity to try a Britih Rail Pie!!! you live & learn KRO |

I remember that season well we were playing at Sheff Wed and Millwall were at home and over the Millwall tannoy it said that Sheff Wed beat Blues 1-0 which meant that Millwall would be virtually certain of promotion, the Millwall fans according to the radio were celebrating on the pitch then came across the official final score from Hillsborough - it read Sheff Wed 0 Birmingham City 1, yet another way win and then we went to Orient and won 1-0 and we were up. |

Sorry to be an anorak but I think we won Sheff wed match 2.1, its the away ground I have been to most and have some great memories of the place. Today is the anniversery of the disaster there but have to say never been on that end we were always allocated or just turned up on the big open end opposite. RIP to all those scousers what ever people say about them causing the crush it is the job of the police to maintain safety this they totally failed to do and worse up untill this day have never been reprimanded for it. A true injustice. KRO |

Yes, we did win that game at Sheffield Wednesday 2-1, Des.....I think TF was one of the scorers in fact he might have got the winner Bob Latchford got the winner at Orient **thumbup The 15th is the actual anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster ......Terrible day and yes, it was bad planning by the Police not to open extra turnstiles or re-route the crowd to the side But don't forget many Liverpool fans turned up right at 250-255pm straight from the pubs and many of them also had forged tickets......There were many that were totally irresponsible by pushing and shoving from the back as well......The Police were not the only ones at fault that awful day RIP ....You'll Never Walk Alone  |

Brings back memories that game. It was Millwall v Preston North End. There were not many 1st division games that day as England were playing West Germany at Wembley Saturday evening in the European Championship. As Chelsea had no game we went to the Den to watch Millwall. The place was heaving and Millwall had two huge mobs, one behind the goal at the Cold Blow Lane end and in the enclosure on the side. It was late in the game and Millwall were 2-0 up. The place was going crazy as it was but then came the message over the PA system that Birmingham were losing. The place just exploded. Millwall thought they were up and the celebrations spilled over onto the pitch. Then it filtered through that the announcement was wrong. You could hear all the talk was about going over to Orient for the Birmingham game. I knew a few of the Millwall lads at the time and they were really looking forward to plying their trade in the top flight. That was the days when football belonged to the working class, terraces, Saturday afternoon kick offs, no sign of Sky tv, corporates, tourists or celebreties. Paying on the gate, standing with your mates, shoulder to shoulder to defend your 'end'. How times have changed. We went straight from the Den over to Wembley as we had tickets for England v West Germany European Championship quarter final. Lost 3-1. Seems somethings have not changed much at all. |

Great to get a different perspective on the event, I was working in London at Olympia on the day of the orient match, left my truck on site and caught the tube to Orient, Got to mthe groung around ten to seven, there were thousands queeing never thought I would get in. After the match my young bro sidled up to me in a side street, he had skived the day off school and jumped a train, There he was in East London at ten o clock at night penniless! He said I didnt realise there would be so many here!!!! KRO |

You ignoramus. Do some research on the subject, you keep telling us how fond of it you are. I find your comments, implying that Liverpool fans were in any way at fault for this terrible tragedy, particularly offensive. To finish it off with a smiley angel is also very inconsiderate to the memories of those that died. Shame on you, partisan. |

I see your point , Des, about fans of other clubs But I'd never hold The South Yorkshire Police 100 per cent to blame.....True, they were grossly negligent in their duties and one or two higher ranking officers used bad judgement but the fact remains 6,000 Liverpool fans turned up just 5 minutes before kick off , many drunk and disorderly and nearly all of them without match tickets The few hundred that were pushing were told to stop by loudhailers but continued to push the crowd forward Liverpool were also allocated the smaller Leppings Lane stand yet Forest who have far less fans than LFC were given the much bigger Kop terrace at the other end.....Can't really blame the Police for that lack of forethought and planning Let's put it this way.....If Hillsborough that day had been a cricket match, a rugby match or even a Pop concert I don't think we would have witnessed such a tragedy unfold like that KRO |
